Places to Visit
The Delmarva Peninsula offers many special attractions and
annual events. Many have moved here for
just that reason; others have no idea what there is to do! Some great resources to consider in addition
to this listing are “Off 13” and “Day Trips in Delmarva” – both are available
at a variety of local gift shops and bookstores. Frugals magazine is another great resource
found at the Captain’s Cove mailboxes and businesses throughout the
region. Published quarterly, this little
gem is where you will find information about local parades, festivals, and
events along with discount coupons.
Assateague Island isa 37-mile long barrier island located off the easterncoast of the Delmarva
Peninsula facing the AtlanticOcean. The northern two-thirds of the island is in Maryland while
the southern third is in Virginia. The Maryland section contains the majority of Assateague Island National Seashore and Assateague State Park. The Virginiasection contains Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and
a one-mile stretch of land containing the lifeguarded recreational beach
and interpretive facilities managed bythe National Park Service. It isbest known for its herds of feral horses, pristine beaches, and the Assateague
Lighthouse. The island also contains numerous marshes, bays, and
coves, including Toms Cove. Bridge access for cars is possible
from both Maryland and Virginia, though no road runs the full north/south
length of the island.
Berlin’s beautiful tree-lined streets, Victorian town
center, museum and historic homes captivate those who visit. Forty-seven individual
structures in Berlin are noted in the National Register of Historic Places and
represent nearly two centuries of architectural heritage. These structures are
well preserved or renovated and date from three distinct periods: Federal,
Victorian, and 20th Century. The town center features mostly brick structures
with compatible rooflines, proportionate window and door openings, uniform
setbacks from the street, and bulkheads beneath the lower windows. Magnolias,
sycamores, tulip poplars, bald cypress, and ginkgo trees add to the beauty of
the town’s setting.
Berlin has also starred in two major motion pictures. In
1998, Berlin was the location for the filming of Paramount’s Runaway Bride
starring Richard Gere and Julia Roberts. In 2001, Berlin became “Treegap”, the fictional setting for Tuck
Everlasting starring Sissy Spacek, Ben Kingsley, and William Hurt.
Berlin’s Main Street boasts over 50 retail shops, 10 dining
establishments, coffee shops, and more.

The homes around town are all private residences. You canlook from the street, but please don't disturb the occupants. There is free

County Administration building.
The Green - The center of
Accomac is the intersection of Front Street and Courthouse Avenue, which is
also the location of the Green. The Romanesque Revival brick Clerk's Office on
the side of the Green was built in 1889 and has records dating back to 1663.
The cannon on the Green is from the American Revolution.
Old Mercantile Building -
23321 Courthouse Avenue, across the street from the Green. Built in 1816,
this adaptable building has served many purposes including store, customs
office, post office, and bank. The main entrance was originally on the parking
Debtor's Prison - Across
from the county administration building. Built in 1782 as a home for the
jailer. Made into a debtor prison in 1824.
Seven Gables - 23381 BackStreet. Cross Front Street at Courthouse Avenue intersection and you'll be onCross Street. Walk one block and you're at Back Street. This rambling home
was begun in 1788 and had several later additions. The 2-story porch is very
nice, and rare on the Shore. The tiny, cute building that faces Cross Street
was once a doctor's office.
The Haven - 23454 Back
Street. Turn left on Back and across the tiny creek. Begun in 1794, this
home got one addition after another. It now has 6 sections. Remarkable!
Fletcher House - 23368
Back Street. Retrace your steps up Back Street. Built in 1816 and 1820, a
handsome brick home of fine proportions. Wooden door and window lintels are
painted to resemble stone.
Makemie Presbyterian Church
- Corner of Cross and Back Streets. The oldest of this denomination on the
Eastern Shore; built in 1840. The Roman Revival temple-form church was damaged
in the Civil War by Union occupation, but since restored. The octagonal belfry
was added in 1889. Named for Francis Makemie, the Father of American
Presbyterianism. His statue is behind the church.
Bloodworth Cottage - Corner
of Drummondtown Road and Back Street. A wonderful little place built in
the early 1800s that never quite grew a "big house" section. Pleasedon't peek in the windows; it's rude.
St James Episcopal Church - Turn right on Drummondtown Road. The Eastern Shore
seems to specialize in gem-like little churches, and this is one of the best.
Greek Revival style with a Gothic spire. Excellent trompe l'oeil paintings
inside. Built in 1838.
Seymour House -23292
Front Street. From Drummondtown Road, turn right on Front Street. A
classic example of the distinctive "big house little house colonnade andkitchen" architectural style. Begun in 1791, the little round brick
building in the yard is an ice house. Blocks of ice were stored underground
between layers of pine needles or sawdust for use in the summer.
Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge
Wildlife Refuge includes more than 14,000 acres of beach, dunes, marsh, and
maritime forest. Within a workday’s access to millions of people, Chincoteague
Refuge is one of the most visited refuges in the United States, providing
approximately 1.5 million annual visitors with outstanding opportunities to
learn about and enjoy wildlands and wildlife.
Most of the refuge is located on the Virginia end of
Assateague Island; however, 418 acres are on the Maryland side of the island,
427 acres are found on Morris Island, and 546 acres comprise Wildcat Marsh on
the northern tip of Chincoteague Island. Additionally, Chincoteague Refuge’s
boundaries extend south and encompass all or part of the following barrier
islands: Assawoman, Metompkin, and Cedar. The refuge’s location along the
Atlantic Flyway makes it a vital resting and feeding spot for a large number
and diversity of birds.
Chincoteague Refuge, originally established in 1943 to
provide habitat for migratory birds (with an emphasis on conserving greater
snow geese), today provides habitat for waterfowl, wading birds, shorebirds,
and song birds, as well as other species of wildlife and plants. Refuge staff
manage this barrier island habitat to allow many species of wildlife to
co-exist, each establishing their own place in the environment. Refuge
management programs restore threatened and endangered species and conserve
local wildlife and plants. The refuge also provides wildlife-dependent
recreational opportunities such as fishing, hunting, wildlife photography and
observation, interpretation, and environmental education.
Assateague National Seashore
Assateague Island National Seashore is a protected area on a
long barrier island off the coast of Maryland and Virginia. It’s known for its
Atlantic beaches and for trails that wind through marshland, dunes and pine
forest. In the south, Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge is home to wild
Chincoteague ponies, bald eagles and migratory seabirds. Near Toms Cove is the
working, 19th-century Assateague Lighthouse.
The Wildlife Loop Road is not really a trail, but a road
open to cars. However, before 3 PM each day it is open only to hikers and
bikers. Even after 3 PM, the traffic is not heavy and it is slow moving, so the
Wildlife Loop Road is still a fairly safe road to walk or bike.

The Woodland Trail has its own parking lot, which is
located off the main road into the Virginia unit of Assateague Island National
Seashore. Signs point the way. The trail is a paved path and it is flat and
easy to bike or hike. It is one of the few paved paths in the park that has any
shade, though there are plenty of open sections as well.
There are two pony corrals, one at the South Pen on the
road going out to the beach on Assateague, the other, the North Pen on the
service road (about a three-mile walk).
